Previously colonial-era farmland owned by associates of George Washington, this 104-acre preserve has been reclaimed by the forest and wildlife of the Shenandoah Valley. In fact, there have been over 188 flora and 109 bird species identified within the area! The forest is dominated by oak trees along with a remnant population of red cedars.
The preserve is perfect for short hikes with its trails totaling 2.4 miles. In addition to the serene forest, you’ll be able to enjoy views of the Potomac River. Along the trails, you’ll come across an outdoor pavilion, a bird-watching station, and various pollinator gardens.

2. Learn About History at the Antietam National Battlefield

Just across the Potomac is the site of one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War, in which there were nearly 23,000 casualties. The battlefield itself is well-preserved, offering a somber glimpse into one of the darkest chapters of American history. View unit positions marked by old cannons, the military cemetery, and Burnside’s Bridge where Confederates resisted Union charges for hours.
For an in-depth experience, you can take guided tours or head to the visitor center and old field hospital museum.

3. Fishing and Hunting at the Sleepy Creek Wildlife Management Area

Surrounded by a beautiful forest populated by oaks and pines, Sleepy Creek Lake has some of the best northern pike and largemouth bass fishing you can find in West Virginia. The nearly 23,000-acre wildlife management area also features gorgeous mountain ridges where various game can be hunted, including deer, bear, turkey, and grouse.
