Washington, DC
The country’s capital lies just 50 miles away. If you’ve yet to explore the national treasures and cultural wonders of Washington, DC, now’s the time to do so. You can visit the city’s many incredible free museums, the best of which is certainly the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, followed shortly by the National Air and Space Museum.
You can also take a guided tour of many world-famous sights, such as the U.S. Capitol, the Lincoln Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the National Mall, and of course, the White House. Alternatively, soak up world-class art at the National Gallery of Art and the National Portrait Gallery. This city has enough to fill a dozen weekend outings and more.
Greenbrier State Park
If you had something a little nearer and greener in mind for your day out, visit this stunning state park, just 20 miles from town. Surrounding a man-made, 42-acre lake with white sand beaches, the park offers miles of lush forest landscape to explore. Eleven miles of hiking trails meander through a fascinating variety of environments, including rocky areas with intriguing geological formations.
There’s a campground with 164 well-equipped and well-maintained campsites, with fire pits and showering facilities. The lake is a perfect place for fishing, canoeing, kayaking, swimming, and sunbathing. Another much-appreciated feature of this park is how clean and well kept it is.
Baltimore
For a fun day out filled with culture, music, and fantastic food, head into Baltimore. Roam around the beautiful Inner Harbor district, enjoying views of the ships, top-notch shopping, and fantastic seafood eateries. Here, you can visit Maryland Science Museum, the National Aquarium, and the American Visionary Arts Museum, all within easy walking distance.
The Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine is another must-see sight in this historical city, as well as the Baltimore Museum of Art, which has works by Van Gogh, Cezanne, and Picasso. And for sports fans, you can’t miss a baseball game at Oriole Park at Camden Yards, home of the Baltimore Orioles.
Ellicot City
For a quieter outing, pay a visit to the country’s oldest railway station in historical Ellicot City, a smaller town to the north of Washington. As you stroll along streets past hundreds of 18th- and 19th-century buildings, you truly gain a sense of the past. Pick up souvenirs in the many quaint little shops, and if you’d like to stay the night, book a room in the Wayside Inn B&B, where George Washington himself once stayed.
