1. Sleepy Creek Wildlife Management Area
Encompassing a territory of almost 23,000 acres, Sleepy Creek Wildlife Management Area features a lush pine and oak forest, as well as the Sleepy Creek Lake, which has become one of the most popular fishing destinations among visitors from Martinsburg, Hagerstown, and other nearby urban areas. This body of water has a surface area of 205 acres and is home to some great specimens of largemouth bass, channel catfish, bluegill, crappie, and northern pike.
Getting to Sleepy Creek Wildlife Management Area from downtown Martinsburg takes about 45 minutes by car, driving 20 miles along Tuscarora Pike. While fishing is the most popular activity in the area, visitors can also enjoy a vast array of outdoor sports, including hiking, hunting, mountain biking, and boating. Overnight visitors can set up their tents at one of the seven different campsites available at this WMA, which can be booked online and by phone.
2. Cacapon Resort State Park
Featuring two different bodies of water with designated fishing areas, Cacapon Resort State Park is another excellent choice for anglers in search of a good destination within driving distance from the Martinsburg downtown area. This place spans an area of more than 6,100 acres and was established in 1937. Since then, it has been a well-known destination in the region thanks to the broad range of outdoor activities it offers to visitors.
Getting to Cacapon Resort State Park from the Martinsburg city center takes about 45 minutes by car, driving 33 miles along routes WV-45 and US-522. The fishing areas are located along the shores of a lake not far from the entrance, as well as around a small reservoir just behind the cabins. Both bodies of water are regularly stocked with trout, and they are also home to other species, including catfish, bluegill, and bass.
3. Greenbrier State Park
Located just 30 miles east of Martinsburg, Greenbrier State Park spans more than 1,400 acres of territory and was established in 1963. The park is managed by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and is a top-ranked weekend destination in the region. The fishing areas at this park are located along the shores of Greenbriar Lake, which is home to species including rainbow trout, bluegill, and largemouth bass. Getting here from Martinsburg takes about half an hour by car.
