The alternator in your car is a vital part of the vehicle’s charging system, as it maintains the battery power level and supplies power to the electrical systems. An alternator lasts approximately 10 years, but climate, driving style, and other conditions can reduce this lifespan. As your Cadillac dealer, we would like you to know the possible signs that you need an alternator repair.

Does Your Cadillac Need an Alternator Repair? Your GM Dealer Can Replace It

Battery Light Stays On

Your battery light usually lights up when you start your engine and then disappears. If the light stays on, there is a problem with your charging system. The alternator is not necessarily the culprit, but it is one of the parts that our service department will check for you. A charging system problem can’t rectify itself, but our trained technicians can pinpoint and repair the problem for you.

Dim or Bright Lights

If your headlights dim when your car idles, and then become bright when you rev the engine, this can be a sign of a failing alternator. The alternator allocates power to all the vehicle’s electrical systems as needed, but when it starts to fail its power output reduces. If there is less power available, your car prioritizes which electrical systems should receive that power.

Strange Engine Noises

A failing alternator can start to make strange noises. A whining sound from the engine or a constant buzzing can be signs of alternator trouble. One of the alternator belts can wear and slide off a pulley, or a bearing inside the alternator may be damaged. If you experience any unusual sounds from your engine, book your car for a repair with our service department and we will find the source of the problem.

Electrical Issues

The reduced power of a failing alternator will cause random electrical glitches. Radio issues, windshield wipers that suddenly stop working, and power windows that delay opening or closing, are all signs that the electrical system is not working correctly. The more the alternator weakens, the more frequently these glitches will appear.

Headlights Malfunction

The headlights require power from the electrical system to work, but if the alternator doesn’t supply enough power, the lights will start to flicker. Headlights require a consistent power supply and fluctuating power levels will burn them out much faster. If you find you must replace bulbs more frequently than you should, you may have an alternator problem.

Loose Connections

The alternator may be working perfectly, but one or more of its connections may be loose or damaged. If this is the case, power from the alternator will be transmitted through the cables and they will heat up. If you smell burning wire, the alternator connections may be to blame.
