1. Greenbrier State Park
Camp in Greenbrier State Park and explore the Appalachian Mountains on eleven miles of hiking trails. The scenic paths wind through numerous wildlife habitats, over rocky terrain, and up steep inclines and provide spectacular views of the surrounding landscape. Relax on the white sandy beach, paddle, boat, and fish for largemouth bass, trout, and bluegill in the 42-acre freshwater lake or rent a rowboat or paddleboat and spend a day on the water.
The park has 165 campsites in the forest to choose from. There are 40 sites with electric hookups, water, a picnic table, a fire ring, and bathhouses with hot showers nearby.
2. South Mountains State Park
The park is in a breathtaking region with 3,000 feet elevations. Hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders will discover a roaring 80-foot waterfall and babbling mountain streams on 40 miles of rugged multi-purpose trails. The Jacob Fork River and its tributaries offer excellent trout fishing. The visitor center features top-quality exhibits on the culture and the natural history of the South Mountains.
Camp in a tent, trailer, or RV on the banks of the Jacob Fork River at campsites with picnic tables and fire circles. There are two RV sites with electric hookups. All the sites are near a bathhouse with hot showers and drinking water. Roll out your sleeping bag at one of the equestrian campsites along 33 miles of bridle trails or enjoy a backcountry experience at one of the 24 backpacking campsites scattered throughout the park. Each site has a pit toilet nearby.
3. Cunningham Falls State Park
Enjoy the picturesque beauty of the Catoctin Mountains on challenging hiking trails that cut through rocky and steep terrain and provide breathtaking scenery. Hunting Creek Lake is a top spot for trout fishing. Anglers also regularly reel in bass, sunfish, bluegill, crappie, and catfish. Lush green lawns and tall trees border the beautiful sandy swimming beach, and there is a boat ramp and boat rentals available during the summer months.
The park is divided into two areas. The William Houch Area features a scenic lake, spectacular falls, and a well-equipped campground with primitive and electric sites. Campers can also stay over at the smaller campground in The Manor Area close to the Scales and Tales Avery and the historic Catoctin Iron Furnace. Both campgrounds have bathhouses with hot showers and flush toilets.
4. Sleepy Creek Wildlife Management Area
Nearly 23,000 rugged acres stretch out over mature oak, hickory, and pine forests along two mountain ridges. Stay over in one of the scenic primitive campsites in the forest and explore nature hiking, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, and birdwatching. Approximately 25 miles of hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails meander through the region filled with bears, deer, bobcats, coyotes, foxes, and minks.
Birdwatchers will spot warblers, vireos, flycatchers, ovenbirds, hawks, and bald eagles. The 205-acre Sleepy Creek Lake has two fishing piers and holds largemouth bass, northern pike, bluegill, and crappie.
